18 Most Challenging NEW RPGs of 2022


RPG fans tend to have plenty of excellent new games to play each year and it's looking like 2022 is going to be no different in fact the volume of rpgs set to come out in the coming 12 months is mouth-watering with many major games set to launch in 2022 that should appeal to the genre fans here we're going to take a look at a few such games.

1. STARFIELD

It's been a while since bethesda game studios put out a new single-player rpg that combined with the fact that starfields is the studio's first new ip in what feels like forever has put the upcoming sci-fi rpg high on most people's lists of anticipated upcoming games there's still plenty that we don't know about the game yet but if it can capture the magic the bgs games have been characterized by so often in the past it's probably going to be a truly special experience.

2. ELEX II

Piranha bites 2019 sci-fi rpg elix was a little rough around the edges but even though the game had its fair share of issues it had enough going for it to really build and cultivate a dedicated fan base that fan base is going to have some interesting things to look forward to this year when elix 2 launches march the game will feature five factions with each of them having their own unique bases different weapons magic and skills.

There would be over a hundred enemy types in the game while the five factions offer more than 300 npcs that would play a part in the story the overall number of spoken words is over 350 000 with the npcs having the lion's share fans of the original should also expect quite a bit of combat along with different party members each having their own unique quest lines there are also world quests and dungeons to explore experiencing everything will take up to 60 hours though it's unknown if there will be multiple endings or branching decisions to encourage replaying the story.

3. GRANDBLUE FANTASY: RELINK

Cygame's rpg will feature two modes main story and quests with the former having a main narrative with easy normal and hard difficulties you can explore the world recruit allies level up and customize them and so much more quests are essentially opportunities for four players online co-op which allows utilizing ones items and builds along with grand grandia and lyra other confirmed characters include catalina lancelot pracebo siegfried rosetta charlata eaguin and many more each has their own unique fighting style and abilities to customize.

4. POKEMON LEGENDS: ARCEUS

Pokemon fans have been asking for the series to try new and different things for quite some time now and with pokemon legends arceus it seems like that's finally going to happen adopting an open world approach and taking elements from games such as breath of the wild and monster hunter pokemon legends is making some interesting promises and we're curious to see how it turns out.

5. DYING LIGHT 2 STAY HUMAN

As opposed to its action adventure predecessor dying light 2 stay human is going to be a full-on action rpg and techland is certainly making some bold promises about how the game is going to make good on that promise from expansive progression and customization to a heavy emphasis on choice and consequence mechanics there's plenty that dying light 2 is going to do that if implemented properly should make it an unmissable game for genre fans.

6. HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST

Gorilla games horizon zero dawn was probably one of the best and most successful starts that a new ip can hope for and with its upcoming sequel the franchise could take another huge step forward forbidden west is promising to build on the strengths of its predecessors in exciting ways and rpg fans in particular should have plenty to look forward to what with the added emphasis on progression builds and more.

7. ELDEN RING

From software has developed a number of instant classic rpgs since demon souls launched back in 2009 and with eldon ring the developer is looking to take another huge step forward taking the style of gameplay that the developer has become synonymous with and blending it with a full open world eldon ring looks like it's going to deliver yet another stellar experience having already spent quite a bit of time with the game until now we feel confident in saying that this has the potential to be one of 2022's highlights.

8. TINY TINA'S WONDERLANDS

Borderlands 2 tiny tina dlc was an interesting experiment back when it first launched in 2013 and later this year gearbox is going to expand on that with a full-fledged game in the form of tiny tina's wonderlands combining the looter shooter first person action of borderlands with a fantasy aesthetic set against the backdrop of a tabletop rpg tiny tina's wonderlands looks like it's going to be built around quite a unique and interesting hook whether or not it does justice to that though its gameplay remains to be seen but we're certainly keeping an eye on it.

9. GOTHAM KNIGHTS

Gotham knights has been on our radar pretty much since the day it was first announced and that's not just because it's set in the batman universe though that's a pretty huge bonus of course the promise of having four playable superheroes each with their own distinct strengths and weaknesses is an exciting one and being able to freely explore and a much more dynamic and lived and open world is of course a big draw as well there's still some skepticism out there about whether taking the action rpg route is the right fit for this game but if developer wb games montreal can get the balance right they might just deliver one of their best games ever.

10. HOGWARTS LEGACY

There's so much we don't know about hogwarts legacy since its announcement the game has completely receded into the background so there's no denying that there's no shortage of question marks over the game that said given its premise of a fully open world action rpg set in and around hogwarts where you get to live out the life of a student at a wizarding school it's hard not to be excited about its potential here's hoping it can do justice to that premise.

11. WARTALES

Shiro games war tales is definitely one of the more low profile games in this list but as those who've been keeping up with it would tell you it's one worth keeping an eye on the turn-based tactics rpg entered early access in december and reception for the game has been very positive if the developer can keep up this level of quality and ensure that the final product makes good on what's been a great start for the game it's going to be a great game that rpg fans won't want to miss

12. BROKEN ROADS

Like war tales broken roads is not as high profile as most other games on this list but again it's definitely one of those worth keeping an eye on the narrative driven rpg is promising a rich post-apocalyptic setting and a story rife with tough moral choices in addition to a focus on engaging exploration and tense turn-based combat of course making promises is easier than keeping them but if broken roads does what it says it will it'll be a special game

13. FORSPOKEN

It's always exciting to see a big publisher fully backing a new ip and that's exactly what square enix is going with for spoken what we've seen of the open world action rpg so far has certainly caught our attention and with its focus on magic based combat and fast traversal and movement the game has the potential to deliver something that we don't see all too often in the genre hopefully it will be able to live up to those expectations.

14. WEIRD WEST

Weird west coming from the minds that brought us games such as dishonored and prey weird west is looking like one of the most fascinating games of the year blending immersive sim and rpg mechanics the game is promising an emergent system driven experience full of possibilities and player choices all set against a fascinating fantasy-infused wild west backdrop the more we see of weird west the more excited we get to get our hands on it so it's fair to say that it's easily one of our most anticipated games in the coming months

15. SALT AND SACRIFICE

Ska studios salt and sacrifice is something of a fan favorite for rpg fans and it's not hard to understand why its upcoming sequel salt and sacrifice is bringing over that same grueling combat mechanical depth and dark fantasy world with the promise of further improvements and the addition of new features and mechanics to deliver an even more immersive role-playing experience as anyone who's played the first game will tell you this is a mouth-watering prospect.

16.  STRANGER OF PARADISE FINAL FANTASY ORIGIN

A final fantasy action rpg inspired by no that's an elevator pitch that you can't help but be immediately interested in strangers of paradise final fantasy origin might be making some questionable choices with its story and storytelling but purely from a gameplay perspective everything that we know of this game so far has us excited tense combat deep progression and grueling challenge in a final fantasy game sign us up.

17. MARVELS MIDNIGHT SUNS

With the promise of a diverse cast of beloved marvel characters the opportunity to create your own superhero from scratch an engaging turn-based battle system and more midnight suns is shaping up to be a unique game that just might turn out to be one of the most interesting experiences of the year.

18. TRIANGLE STATEGY

Octopath travelers hd 2d aesthetic is surely one of the best new things square enix has come up with in quite some time and seeing that come back in a game should have been an exciting prospect in and of itself add that to the prospect of a well-made turn-based tactics rpg that takes cues from classics such as final fantasy tactics and you have a game that it's hard not to be excited about. Triangle strategies name notwithstanding it's easily one of the most exciting switch exclusives set to launch in 2022.
