In 2017 horizon zero dawn crafted one of the most imaginative and well-realized post-apocalyptic settings we've ever seen in a game rather than just putting players in a dreary barren world which is very much the norm in the genre gorilla's open open-world action rpg transported us to a lush vibrant overgrown world that was centuries past the point where it had
first died and best of all it populated that world with mechanical monstrosities those machines were very much the star of the show and of course the primary attraction for most who played the game and that is very much going to be the case in the upcoming sequel horizon forbidden west as well in preparation for its imminent launch though here we're going to talk about those machines more specifically about
how they came into existence in the horizon universe and eventually how they took over if you've finished the game you know the answer to that is a complicated one and yet still one that can be boiled down to a couple of crucial factors the most crucial one being the faro plague before we talk about the faro plague though we need to discuss the man it was named after ted farrow founder owner and chairman of faro automated industries or fas
by the late 21st century fas had become a major world power unto itself and it established itself as the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of war machines that it supplied to parties all over the world these machines known as peacekeeper robots were fas's primary and biggest source of income which meant that faro wanted to engineer them to be as efficient and formidable as they could be
that led to some questionable decisions and peacekeeping machines were designed with various properties that would eventually go on to prove very problematic to say the least one of their properties was the ability to consume small quantities of biomass as sustenance in order to keep themselves running and functioning
another was the ability to hack into any and all machines override them and bring them under their own control meanwhile knowing that the peacekeeper machines had to be protected against similar attacks faro also ordered that they'd be built with encryption codes that would make it impossible to hack them while also ordering that no backdoor be built into their systems so that there would be no chance whatsoever
of them being hacked or compromised eventually those three factors all proved to be the undoing of ted farrow and certainly the entire human race at large a glitch was discovered in one particular swarm of the machines that made them unreceptive to the commands and corrupted by that glitch the machines not only started overriding all other machines thus exponentially self-replicating and constantly growing
their numbers but also started consuming any and all biomass around them as sustenance this was dubbed as the faro plague operation enduring victory and project zero dawn together were meant to ensure that this threat could eventually be stopped and to an extent they were successful but within 15 months of the
discovery of the glitch the faro plague had consumed all biomass on earth leaving the planet entirely sterile and completely bereft of all life it wasn't until nearly a century later that the ai gaia was able to brute force its way through the machine's encryption and hack them to render them inert following which the process of re-seeding life and restoring the planet began
it's worth mentioning of course that the peacekeeper machines made by fas are only a fraction of the machines that we encounter in horizon zero dawn man-made war machines like the corrupters and death bringers are what fas manufactured and the animalistic machines that we associate gorillas series with most often weren't made until much much later these were made by hephaestus one of gaia's sub-functions
why exactly gaia used these machines for the purpose of reseeding and restoring the planet and since the humans that were eventually restored and released back into the world were also under gaia's care these machines were all docile and for the longest time were no threat to the sparse population of the new world roughly two decades before horizon zero dawn's events around the time that airloy was born that changed a signal from an unknown origin that we're hoping
we'll learn more about in horizon forbidden west broke gaia's systems causing all of her sub-functions to become independent and self-functioning ais one of these ais was of course hades whose one and only purpose had been to reset the planet back to its apocalyptic state in case the planet's reseeding ever went wrong but with gaia no longer able to oversee its functions gaia had to self-destruct to ensure that hades didn't carry out that function
what that meant of course was that hephaestus had become a self-aware independently functioning ai as well by this time the humans of the world had started hunting gaia's machines for their components and parts but with gaia no longer overseeing it hephaestus began taking that as acts of aggression in order to let its machines defend themselves it started making new and more dangerous kinds of machines ones
that were much more deadly much more armed and much more aggressive and openly hostile to humans this process became known to the human population as the derangement of the machines a new breeds of machines like sawtooths thunderjaws and every other kind of deadly hostile machine that you might remember from the game were born
by the time horizon zero dawn ends airloy has dealt with the hades threat but of course gaia is still no longer around which means that hephaestus is still pumping out killer robots that tend to attack humans on site perhaps the end game is going to be the dismantling of hephaestus or perhaps it will be the restoration of gaia one way or another though machines are of course still very much going to be a major
threat in horizon forbidden west several favorites from the first game are going to return and several more new ones are going to be introduced as well a few of which have already been revealed from the mammoth-like tremor tusks and the serpentine slither fangs to the dinosaur-like clawstriders and many more
and we're as curious to learn about what happens to them from a narrative point of view as we are to take them on in combat and see how much of a threat each of them will pose and with that we've reached the end
