With its unique platform, apart from successfully gaining tremendous numbers of users and viewers, politicians are also concerned in this media application as it disturbs national security. This has led to many countries to take action in banning this application.

Prior to becoming a sensational trend worldwide, Tik Tok was an application originated from China and known as Douyin.

How TikTok became TikToK?

In 2012, Tik Tok was established by a brand new company ‘Byte Dance’. Byte Dance was founded by a Chinese citizen name Zhang YiMing. In 2016, Byte Dance has launched an application for sharing short-duration videos known as Douyin.

In this application, users can upload short duration videos with the background of popular songs and has an attractive ways for videos editing such as using text templates. Due to the origin of this application which is in China, a few of rules has been made that it need to be filtered first.

herefore, for Byte Dance to make its way in global market some adjustment was made and thus TikTok was founded in 2017. Even so, Douyin still remains in China market and Tik Tok is for global market  that can be downloaded from Google Play Store and Apple Play Store. 

In 2019, Tik Tok can be accessed by 150 nations with 75 different languages. In April 2020, 2 billion numbers of downloads for this application was recorded. This has gain concerns and doubts especially for the US. Moreover, this popular application also comes from China. Tik Tok has a very simple concept unlike Facebook or Instagram which the users need to search for their interests

using own individual network.

Meanwhile, Tik Tok use an algorithm of what frequent videos the users watch as most of Tik Tok videos are based on musical concept, not specific languages. Thus, limitless kind of videos can be watched by users anywhere in the world as long as it gains users’ interest.

Why TikTok is dangerous?

Tik Tok videos lasts for less than 60 seconds, consequently lead to users watching huge amount of videos.  This means that enormous data can be captured by this application regarding the users. This worries a lot of countries like the US. Donald Trump has given response that this application can threat the US citizens’ security and is risky for data leakage to China government.

However, Byte Dance denied that it leaks any users data to the China government. At the same time, TikTok’s largest market, India, has banned this application in June this year.  The application’s algorithm seems very simple yet perfect.

The results of users’ analysis pattern lead to users’ addiction to continuously watch more videos contents. Meanwhile in Malaysia,  we believe that Tik Tok has caused some kind of different threat in our social life. Data leakage is definitely a worldwide threat, but culture and social norms will be disrupted if this kind of application wrongly used.
